The R.A.F.T.S. Principle: Changing The Stories That Drive Our Outcomes

Have you ever tried to change any area of your life, and with the zest of motivation, you set some goals, and learnt some new strategies or hacks to help you achieve that goal, only to fall back to old ways after a few weeks or months?

You are not alone. This is the case with most people, and the reason is often that we fail to recognize a psychological foundation that drives action, so most people go straight to trying to change their actions, hoping it will result in a sustained change in outcomes.

But what is the missing link?

The 6th of June, 2024 was World Emotional Intelligence Day, and in commemoration of that, EQ2Homes partnered with our partner organization, ExperienceSHAPE to host a webinar on PRACTICAL TOOLS TO LEVERAGE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. During the session, facilitated by the CEO of EQ2Homes, Tekena Ikoko, an ICF-Certified Life and Business Coach, one of the tools he shared was what he called The R.A.F.T.S. Principle. Understanding this principle was a game changer for participants of the webinar.

What is The R.A.F.T.S. Principle, and how can it help you create sustained transformation?

R.A.F.T.S. is an acronym for Results, Actions, Feelings, Thoughts, and Stories. It is a framework that shows the relationship between the outcomes we get and the stories we tell ourselves in our lives, and how these two are mediated through the channels of thoughts, feelings, and actions. To better understand how this principle works, think of them as the rungs on the ladder of the transformation you seek (see image below).

The missing link in the transformation strategy most people employ is that they often skip straight to ACTIONS without the first step of identifying the STORIES they tell themselves regarding the result they seek. Stories here represent the beliefs, mindsets, and agreements that we hold in any given area of our lives. Without first identifying and re-writing the stories we hold of ourselves in any given area, these stories will ultimately sabotage our actions and the eventual results.

Here is a summary of how this plays out:

When we change the stories we hold of ourselves regarding a given goal, this feeds the new thoughts we embrace regarding the achievement of the objective, and our thoughts in turn generate new feelings that drive the actions that produce new results.

The R.A.F.T.S. Principle offers a valuable framework for personal transformation. By examining the stories we tell ourselves, we can break free from limiting beliefs and achieve new results. Take control of your story today and start creating the life you desire.

“Stop using old RAFTS for new adventures…if you want to get new results, build new stories.” (Tekena Ikoko)
