EQ2Homes Facilitates Academic Improvement at UNILAG Secondary School, Akoka, Lagos State, Nigeria

Education is a key driver of the development and advancement of any people. According to Statista, 68% of the youth in Nigeria in 2020 had received secondary education. Around 15% had completed primary education, while 17% pursued higher studies after secondary education. A major reason why a lot of Nigerian children do not go on to pursue higher studies is attributed to poverty levels which also, directly or indirectly, affects the performance levels of the students.

The EQ2homes team in Lagos, headed by Miss Anuoluwapo Onabajo, having identified challenges in academic performance among some students at UNILAG Secondary School, Akoka, focused on SS1 students who were academically challenged in one or more subjects. The project for the second term of their academic session commenced on 2nd February and ran for 7 weeks wherein the team worked with 100 students from SS1 weekly. Observing struggles with focus, discipline, and dedication to their studies, the team used stories, interactive sessions, and games to inspire the students to take greater responsibility for their time and proactively plan their success. EQ2Homes developed and distributed study tips and a study schedule for the students to use to plan their study habits.

The impact of this was observed at the end of the term. At the beginning of the new term, we reviewed their results and observed significant improvements. For instance, one student who initially ranked 190th overall improved to 96th place after a term. Another student improved from 159th to 112th, a third student rose from 161st to 81st, and yet another from 205th to 161st. Beyond their positions, we also reviewed their performances in their various subjects and observed improvements across various subjects for many of the students. The objective of the project has had a positive impact, as evidenced by the improved academic standings of about 30 of these students.

As EQ2Homes continues its push to empower more students across Africa with Social and Emotional learning, we know that empowering their academic growth and character development is a vital cog in that wheel. We celebrate all our mentors and supervisors who are at the forefront of making this vision a reality.
